Class lesson saves a life!
The Health Science Academy lesson for the day on Jan. 23 was the Heimlich maneuver.  Little did Abbey Hugo know that the very next day she would need to use it to save a life.  She works as a hostess at a restaurant and ran to the rescue of a woman who was choking.  Congratulations to Abbey and her teachers! See more.
Elementary schools honored
The Healthier U.S. School Challenge, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has selected Millard’s 25 elementary schools for Bronze Awards. The designation recognizes excellence in nutrition. Each school's food service program will receive $500. Schools also will receive a plaque and banner. An awards ceremony will be scheduled. Millard’s food service program is managed by Sodexo.
Kids compete in Culinary Throw Down
Teams from Millard Horizon’s culinary academy, Millard South and Millard North competed at the first annual “High School Culinary Throw Down.”  The event, sponsored by Millard Food Service and Sodexo, was held Jan. 31 at Millard South. Students were given two hours to prepare a salad, side and entree for judges to sample and rate. See photos and list of winners.

Mayor meets Mayor!

Hurrah for the Zero Hero

IB schools receive good news
The International Baccalaureate Organization commended Aldrich Elementary School for its commitment and innovation in implementing the IB program.  Millard North High School also received good news. A statistical bulletin showed that IB students in Millard North High School’s Class of 2011 achieved a higher grade than the world average score, and for the first time, the percentage of Millard North students achieving the highest grade equaled the world percentage.
Student achieves perfect ACT score
Peter Xu, a junior at Millard North High School, earned the top composite score of 36 on the ACT exam taken last fall. Only one-tenth of 1 percent of test-takers attain the top score each year.  Two Millard seniors also achieved perfect scores:  Katie Preston of Millard West and Cole Wilhelmi of Millard North.
Two-county plan fights truancy
Millard's average daily attendance is 96 percent. However, there is a problem with truancy in Nebraska. Last year, 21,980 students state-wide missed more than 20 days of school.  A new state law calls for a report to be filed with the county attorney after a student has been absent for 20 days. Millard will send a letter when students have accumulated 8 and 15 days of absence. A new plan, developed by the superintendents in Douglas and Sarpy counties,.aims to assist families well before 20 days are accumulated. Millard's revised rule reflects the new law.
Millard celebrates academic success
Nearly 30 percent of Nebraska’s National Merit semifinalists come from Millard’s three high schools. This is a remarkable achievement since Millard comprises just 7 percent of the state’s high school enrollment. Pictured are Katie Preston of Millard West and Cole Wilhelmi of Millard North who achieved perfect scores on the ACT.  See more.

Millard's high schools excel
Two new reports reveal good news about Millard's high schools.  A survey conducted of 2011 graduates shows that 96 percent plan to continue their education after high school -- an all-time high.  Millard's plan to develop an "Advanced Placement Culture" also is showing success. Students took 2,352 AP exams in 2011, an increase of 202 from the previous year. They also scored high on an international comparison:  66 percent of Millard students earned top scores compared to the global average of 60 percent.
Millard excels on state tests
The Millard School District achieved among the top scores in the metro and state on reading and math tests. The results showed that 88 percent of Millard students achieved proficiency in reading. The state average was 72 percent. Math tests revealed that 81 percent of Millard students were proficient. The state average was 63 percent. The results for all districts and schools can be viewed at the Nebraska Department of Education website.
